DISCOVERY FLIGHT / KART
Discovery Flight in Watertown, NY
A discovery flight is a real introductory lesson with a certificated flight instructor. You meet your instructor at Watertown International Airport (KART), walk around the airplane together, and take the controls over the North Country under their supervision. No experience is needed.
Who a discovery flight is for
Some people book one because they have wanted to fly since they were kids. Others are weighing a pilot certificate and want to know how it feels before committing. Plenty of Fort Drum soldiers, Jefferson County locals and visitors to the Thousand Islands simply want to see the region from above with their own hands on the yoke.
Whatever brings you out to KART, the flight is the same: an honest first lesson, not a sightseeing ride. You will do real flying, and your instructor will tell you plainly what training would look like if you decide to keep going.
What happens on the day
- 01
Meet your instructor
You meet a certificated flight instructor at the airport in Dexter, just outside Watertown. They will ask what got you interested and what you want to get out of the flight.
- 02
Preflight introduction
Together you walk around the airplane. Your instructor shows you what pilots check before every flight and why, from fuel and oil to the control surfaces.
- 03
Take the controls
Once you are airborne and clear of the airport, your instructor hands you the controls. You will feel how the airplane responds to gentle inputs while they handle anything you are not ready for.
- 04
Debrief and next steps
Back on the ground, you talk through the flight. If you want to keep training, your instructor can explain the path, the hours involved and what it might cost based on our published rates.
Which airplane you might fly
Our fleet is based at KART: a 1968 Cessna 150H (N6944S), a 1973 Cessna 172M (N20528) and a glass-panel Cessna 172 Skyhawk (N273EB). The two-seat 150 is our usual choice for first lessons and budget flying. The four-seat 172s are built for training and sharing the journey. Ask us which aircraft is available for your flight.
Price, length and what to bring
Ask us about the current discovery flight price and how long the flight lasts. We would rather give you the accurate answer on the phone than publish a number that may be out of date.
Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes, and bring sunglasses if you have them. You do not need an FAA medical certificate to try a discovery flight with an instructor. Weather in the North Country can change quickly, so your instructor will make a safety-first call on the day and reschedule if conditions are not right.
After your first flight
A discovery flight is the first entry in your pilot logbook. From there, most people head toward a Sport, Recreational or Private pilot certificate. We train under Part 61, so lessons are built around your schedule rather than a fixed classroom calendar, and you pay as you go at our hourly rates.
